Prepare for Winter Weather and Minimize Business Interruption - Image 1

It’s hard to predict winter weather. But regardless of what part of the country you live in, chances are you will experience some sort of winter weather. Winter weather has the potential to damage your property and disrupt your business operations.
But your facility can be prepared, no matter what this winter season may hold, by following these tips.

Building Preparations

  • Prevent ice dams by implementing a preventive roof maintenance plan that involves periodically inspecting the roof drainage system for proper flow, including drains, scuppers, gutters and down spouts.
  • Before turning on the furnace for the first time, clean or replace the filter, check the blower belt and motor, ensure the vents in the house are unobstructed and remove flammable objects from around the furnace and water heater.
  • Remind employees to use caution with electric space heaters. Choose heaters with automatic shut-off switches and non-glowing elements. And never place a space heater on top of furniture or near water.
  • Protect pipes against freezing by paying careful attention to temperature and water flow throughout the winter.
  • Check the strength of your roof and its capacity for snow.

Operations Planning

  • Create a snow removal plan to ensure safe access to the facility for employees, customers and suppliers.
  • Plan for alternative power supplies so you can continue operating some or all of your electrical equipment.
  • Create a business continuity plan to help you avoid halting or slowing down your operations. Having a plan in place ensures that your employees will know what steps to take in the event of inclement weather.
